Dutrion tolerates a lot, which is exactly why the one exception catches good crews off guard.

You applied the Dutrion, held the contact time, and the results came back softer than they should have. With a product this forgiving, there are not many ways that happens, and one test strip rules out the most common one.

Start With the Good News

Dutrion Is Built to Tolerate a Messy Job

Most disinfectants need near perfect conditions to hit their label claims. Dutrion shrugs off a lot.

It works through soil

Low oxidation power, high oxidation capacity, so it keeps going through organic load. The same soil inactivates quats outright.

Tolerance 2

Cold and hard water are fine

Effective at low temperatures and across a wide pH range, and it does not shift the pH of what it touches.

Tolerance 3

It goes where a sprayer cannot

As a true gas it reaches porous materials, wall cavities, ductwork and contents in place.

That is why it ends up being the workhorse. It is tolerance for what is left after you clean, though, not a substitute for cleaning. And there is one thing it cannot push past.

The Exception

Free Chlorine Is Not Soil. It Is Competition.

Organic soil is a load Dutrion works through. Free available chlorine is not a load at all. It is another oxidizer on the same surface, and an oxidizer does not get to pick what it meets first. Leftover chlorine is right there, so that is what your Dutrion finds.

On a REACT|EXTRACT job it has an obvious source.

  • An oxygenated surfactant. It turns that chlorine into harmless salt.
  • It leaves the surface neutralized, which is a favor for the Dutrion.

The Short Version

Underperforming Dutrion is usually not weak Dutrion. It is Dutrion that got spent on the wrong thing.

Which is why turning the dose up is the wrong move. You would be paying twice to fix what a test strip tells you for free.

Apply Dutrion when the surface passes the checks, not when a timer goes off. Dwell times move with temperature, humidity and porosity. Your truck clock knows none of that.

The Green Light

Three Checks Before Dutrion Goes On

Under a minute for all three, and two of them you already do by feel.

1. No free chlorineFree chlorine strip on the surface, or a swab or rinse from it. It has to read zero. This is the gate.
2. Surface is dryLook and feel, plus a moisture check suited to the method. No visible moisture, no pooling, no foam.
3. Neutral to acidicpH strip on the surface or a swab. Alkaline means something got on there that should not have.
If check 1 reads

Go back a step rather than waiting longer. Re-apply OxyPar LR per label, re-extract, and re-test.

On check 3, because it sounds like a contradiction

Dutrion stays effective across a wide pH range, so check 3 is not about efficacy. It is about stability. Alkaline conditions turn chlorine dioxide into byproducts that do not disinfect, so you lose product while the clock runs.

The Trap

Why OSB Lies to You

Porous materials do not just get wet on the outside. OSB, block, unsealed concrete and framing pull liquid down into the material, and what is dissolved in it goes down too. So you can extract a wall, test it, get a clean strip, and be completely right at that moment.

Then it dries. Moisture heads back to the surface and brings the chlorine with it. Nobody did anything wrong. The material simply had more to give.

Test at the surface right before you apply. The reading you act on should be minutes old, not an hour old.

Same gate either way

Liquid on a defined surface or dry fumigation of a whole air volume, both are only as strong as what the surface hands them. Fumigation is stricter, since every surface in the room pulls on the same gas. And chlorine dioxide gas is not something you judge by smell: the OSHA limit is 0.1 ppm over eight hours, 0.3 ppm short term, and 5 ppm is immediately dangerous. Keep a calibrated monitor on site and let it decide re-occupancy.

One Test Strip Against a Return Trip

Dutrion is forgiving about almost everything the trade throws at it. The exception is another oxidizer already on the surface, and a strip finds it in seconds. So when results come back soft, the question is not whether the product was strong enough, but what else was on that wall when it got there?
