  • Get Suited Up for the Splash Zone!

It is always important to be dressed properly for the job you are going on. At Enviroguard we recognize that safety is a top priority. We want to make sure you and your team are educated on how to suit up properly. When it comes to water remediation, we also want to make sure you are staying dry! Following proper PPE protocols and understanding the materials can deeply help you in this endeavor. In this article we will go over different types of suits, types of respiratory gear, gloves, and a bonus for water remediation. First, when preparing for a job there are a couple of questions you need to ask yourself: 1) Will you be using products that are non-oxidizers or oxidizers? 2) What type of exposure environment will you be in? Incidental, direct, or prolonged? Once you answer these questions, you can use this table to guide you in the right direction! So, what are oxidizers? Oxidizers are chemical compounds that let off oxygen or other readily combustible particulates. Essentially, products that contain oxidizers are more prone to creating fires, are hazardous, and not good to breath in; so, it is important that you have the correct respiratory gear. Also, what are exposure levels? Let's break them down. An incidental exposure level is when the likelihood of chemical contact is minimal. An example of this is working in an open-framed environment. A direct exposure level is when you expect the occasional spray and splash. An example of this would be working in a closed space (specifically where chemical is less that three feet from you). A prolonged exposure environment is where chemical contact is continuous and spray/splash is certainly expected. N-95 Masks Organic Vapor with P/100 Multi-Gas / Multi-Vapor with P/100 *It is important to make sure that you have the right cartridge when working with oxidizers. If you are working with oxidizers, you need to use the multi-gas/multi-vapor cartridge. If you can smell anything then you have the wrong cartridge -- make sure it is not an organic cartridge. 45-55 G Micropourus - A breathable, non-woven material that resists dirt and non-oxidizer incidental chemical contact alone. Polypropylene - A non-breathable, non-woven material that resists 480+ minutes of non-oxidizer prolonged chemical exposure as well as incidental oxidizer contact. Saranex - A non-breathable, non-woven material that resists 480+ minutres of prolonged chemical exposure from oxidizers.

Because X4 also repels salts, it also prevents freeze/thaw damage in cold climate zones. It is also important that your crew it prepared to go on site safely with the correct PPE. Before you get to the job, make sure you think through what will be needed. We have got some recommendations to help your team stay dry and protected. Face/Respiratory PPE: Multi-Gas/Multi-Vapor Cartridge - Even though you may not need this level of protection on every job, you never know what you may encounter and it is important to be prepared. This will protect you from all exposure levels. Scratch-Resistant Goggles - Protect your eyes from chemicals and spray back. Suits: ChemMax 1 Suit - To get the biggest bang for your buck and maximum protect, we recommend the ChemMax 1 suit. Since it is durable you can reuse it on jobs. These suits are designed with topmost protect in mind; the heat sealed seams prevent tear and chemical bleed through. Gloves: SHOWA 15mil - Water can make it easier for your gloves to dissolve. To avoid having to change gloves on the job, use 15mil. These gloves feature an embossed finish which provides vice-like wet and dry grip for optimum precision. Push-Lock System - Our Push-Lock system is designed to prevent chemicals and liquids from in between that pesky area between the sleeve of your suit and gloves. It is easy to use and revolutionary. You simply put one piece under your glove and push and lock the other piece to create a seamless bind between your suit and glove. No matter the cause of the water damage, whether it be a leaky pipe or hurricane, it it important to clean it properly. Try using our PreClean to clean the surfaces. PreClean’s combination of wetting agents, surfactants, and anti-redeposition agents makes the pre-sanitization/disinfection cleaning of low, medium and heavy soil loads on porous, semi-porous, and non-porous surfaces easy and fast. If the water job has become a mold job, you will want to use REACT|EXTRACT to get the job done. To learn more about REACT|EXTRACT, check out this page https://www.enviroguarddirect.com/react-extract. After water damage penetrates a property, it is important to disinfect because standing water can be a breeding group for bacteria and mold growth. To reduce the chances of prolonged damage and issues, make sure disinfection takes place. The best way to accomplish this is with Dutrion. Dutrion is a small, easy-to-transport disinfectant tablet (it also performs odor mitigation!). Dutrion comes in multiple sizes of tablets so you can choose what is best for the job you are preforming. Lastly, didn't your mom always tell "leave a place cleaner than you found it"? You can accomplish this on your water damage jobs with Fortify. Fortify is a concentrated, durable, water-thin sealant built with a marine-grade antimicrobial package to prevent mold formation on structural surfaces prior to build-back. • 1st Certification Class Recap

Last Wednesday, we had our first mold remediation services certification class! It was such an exciting day to host all who came here at Enviroguard HQ. The day was PACKED of training on safety, materials, equipment, and sales strategies. We began the morning by going over different safety protocols and procedures. During this time we went over different types of exposure and the correct PPE. Classmates got to voice struggles that they faced which gave us insight on how to accommodate the needs of our customers in the near future. Then, we transitioned into discussing the right type of equipment selection for different types of jobs. After our first batch of classroom session time, we transitioned to the warehouse to focus on some equipment training. During this session, we went in depth on how to use and maintain the BTM sprayer system. Not only did the attendees learn a lot last week, but we did too and can not wait to continue to improve the course so we can offer it to more firms. Also, it gave us a framework to start thinking through other types of remediation certification.

  • What is the best way to remediate a MSI-2 zone?

Last week we introduced our Mold Severity Indexing system to the blog; but, if you missed it or need a quick recap, here is a fast break down. It is a tool that helps contractors define the mold levels of a zone within a property properly and efficiently. It is based off of the conditions defined by the IICRC but goes more in depth so the best application can be practiced to treat the zone and yield the best results! Spectrum of MSIs: MSI-2 Remediation So last week we discussed how to handle a MSI-1 zone through dutrion fumigation. This week we will be detailing how to successfully remediate a MSI-2 which can be distinguished by light and sporadic mold that has not quite yet caused pigmentation and staining. We want to attack these zones before visible mold staining occurs. In order to get the best results, we recommend cleaning and disinfecting. Depending upon the location of the job and sensitivity of your client we recommend preforming a cleaning wipe-down -- per industry standard IICRC S-520 -- using Botanical, Dutrion, or OxyPar LR. Followed by an antimicrobial application of Dutrion for disinfection. Also, we have created materials to help you walk through these steps. These resources can be found under the Learn tab, on the Procedures page. The first tool is an in-depth Step-by-Step guide. It will take you through what materials are needed to complete the job, how you should prepare, how to scale what product you will need, and use instructions. This guide helps you think through how much product you may need to order and what small things will leave your customer smiling leading them to become a recurring customer. The second tool we have created is a Cocktail Card. This is a resource that you can quickly pull up on the job and remind yourself of some steps that need to take place or materials that will be needed. It also offers some helpful tips so you can ensure you are giving your customer the best results. • How should you remediate MSI-1 Zones?

Have you been introduced to our Mold Severity Index (MSI) yet? This is a tool that helps contractors define the mold levels of a zone within a property. It is based off of the conditions defined by the IICRC but goes more in depth so the best application can be practiced to treat the zone and yield the best results! This is a quick break down of MSIs MSI-1 Remediation To start, we want to tell you how to remediate an MSI-1 zone, which can quickly be described as elevated mold spore levels. This is the first point where remediation should take place. It is important to act at this point in order to prevent visible mold growth, which takes place in MSI-2 through 5. In order to get the best results we recommend practicing Dutrion Fumigation within the zone to successfully remove mold spores and prevent further growth. This recommendation is based off of the EPA 2013 Laboratory Evaluation of the Efficacy of Chlorine Dioxide... If you would like to learn more, about the EPA study, look at this document!
